Actions The chief herb, huang qi, has the effect of augmenting vital energy and strengthening yang qi of the middle burner, lifting up spleen qi and consolidating the exterior. Ren shen, zhi gan cao and bai zhu are the deputy herbs which invigorate qi of the spleen and stomach. Combined with the chief herb, huang qi, they can increase the function of benefiting vital energy and strengthen the middle burner. Blood is the sourse of qi. If qi is deficient for a long time, it can induce the deficiency of blood. Therefore dang gui is used to nourish blood and regulate the ying. It can also assist ren shen and huang qi to invigorate qi and nourish blood. Chen pi regulates vital energy and the stomach, and is the main herb used to regulate qi and thus avoid stagnation due to tonic herbs. These are all assistant herbs. Small doses of sheng ma and chai hu are used to lifit up yang qi and help the chief herb to lift up the collapse of middle burner energy. They are used as assistant and guide herbs. Zhi gan cao, the envoy, is used as the guide herb, which moderates the potency of all herbs in the prescription. All the herbs combine together to cure qi-deficiency syndrome, collapse of middle burner qi and qi-deficiency fever.
