This formula is for acute excess food stasis causing abdominal pain or discomfort without relief. Acting by purgation, it is given in acute presentations for patients with normal or strong Qi. Both Rheum Da Huang and Pharbitis Qian Niu Zi are strong purgatives, and the formula should be discontinued or changed once stools normalize. This takes one to three days.
