Benksy (Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica) describes the Tan method as:  "The slices are dry-fried at a high temperature until blackended but not deformed, then sprayed with salt water to quickly cool them down.  This method retains the herb's ability to tonify the Liver and Kidneys, but also enables it to stop bleeding; it is therefore used for instability of the Penetrating and Conception vessels, which leads to abnormal uterine bleeding, such as extended menstrual periods, or bleeding during pregnancy."*
