Description Dong Quai and Anemarrhena formula is indicated for a general Damp-Heat condition which has affected the joints causing swelling and pain. The specific pattern of Wind-Damp-Heat is seen when there is joint or muscle pain with redness and swelling which aggravated by hot, humid weather. This formula is not just limited to the joints but is also appropriate for treating weepy, hot and moist skin lesions found mainly in the lower part of the body. This formula also has a supplementing action, which follows the Chinese medical concept that Damp-Heat patterns usually appear with an underlying Spleen Qi vacuity, which allows Dampness to accumulate. Li Dong-yuan, the author of this prescription, was the founder of the Spleen/Stomach School of the Jin-Yuan Dynasty. In Dr. Li's theory, he proposed that all chronic illness is largely due to weakening of the Qi transformation associated with the Spleen, Stomach and Triple Burner, leading to accumulation of Dampness in the interior. Medicinals such as dang shen, cang zhu and bai zhu are therefore included to supplement the Spleen Qi. According to Liu Wan-su's Theory of Similar Transformation, accumulations in the body eventually transform into Heat, so Damp accumulation will eventually lead to Damp-Heat. Accumulations of Dampness will also aggravate Blood stasis as well. Dong Quai and Anemarrhena will sucessfully clear Damp-Heat from the body with a focus on swelling and pain in the joints.
