We have shortened the name four gentlemen to, simply, No. 4

This is regarded as the foundation formula for generation of Qi when it is due to poor Spleen or Lung function. Ginseng Ren Shen and Glycyrrhiza Gan Cao tonify Qi, while Atractylodes Bai Zhu and Poria Fu Ling dispel Spleen Damp, allowing the Spleen to send Qi to the Upper Jiao. The term "gentlemen" is the common translation of of jun zi, whose actual meaning has to do with the sage or the person who cultivates higher wisdom and consciousness.
